Cassette Player service. Last updated: date

In short. The player and this website never ask for anyone's name, email, age or address, and there are no user accounts. When a cassette is played, our service records which cassette and which film were played, when, and the serial number of the player. We use this to deliver the film, to protect the films from copying, and to count how often each film is watched. The service runs on Cloudflare, and no advertising or tracking tools are used.

1. Who we are

The Cassette Player and this service are provided by PMI legal entity name, registered address ("PMI", "we"). PMI is responsible for the data described here.

The service is built and operated for PMI by KD-Tech, which acts on PMI's instructions. PMI to confirm how KD-Tech is described

Questions about privacy: privacy contact email.

2. How the player works

The player is plugged into a computer with a USB cable. When a cassette goes in, the player reads a small chip in the cassette and tells this web page, running in your browser, which cassette it is. The page then asks our service for the film and plays it. The player itself has no internet connection, no camera and no microphone.

3. What we collect

When a cassette is played

Each time a cassette is played, or fails to play, our service stores:

For each player we also keep when it was first and last used, and, from the factory, when it was made and its software version.

Because a player usually stays in one home, this record shows when films were played on that player. It does not tell us who you are: we hold no name or contact details to connect it to.

Information your browser sends

Like every website, your browser sends your IP address and basic technical details when it connects. Our service does not store IP addresses in its database. It uses the IP address only to limit how many requests one connection can make in ten seconds, which protects the service from abuse. Cloudflare, which runs the service (see section 7), handles this information as part of operating its network and may keep short-term technical logs. PMI to confirm the log retention set in its Cloudflare account

Information that stays on your computer

The page checks your connection speed, to pick a video quality, and which operating system you use, to offer the right installer. This stays in the page and is not sent to us.

4. What we do not collect

5. Why we use the information

Legal basis (where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies): PMI's counsel to state, for example legitimate interests or performance of a contract

6. Cookies and browser storage

We use no advertising or tracking cookies and no third party cookies.

pmi_playCookieTies a film's playback link to your browser, so a copied link cannot be played elsewhere. It contains a random number only. Used only when the film protection feature is switched on.24 hours

Permission to use the playerBrowser settingYour browser remembers that you allowed this site to talk to the player. It is managed by your browser, not by us.Until you remove it in the browser's settings

PMI staff who manage the service also get a login cookie (pmi_admin, 14 days) on the staff page. Families never receive it.

7. Who processes the information

The service runs on Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.), which stores the database and the films and delivers them over its network. The database is held in Western Europe, and Cloudflare may serve copies of it from data centres in other countries to make it faster. PMI's counsel to describe the transfer safeguards

KD-Tech, which builds and maintains the service for PMI, can access it to do that work.

We do not share the information with anyone else. PMI to confirm, including any reports to film rights holders and whether they contain anything beyond totals

8. How long we keep it

9. Children

The Cassette Player is a toy for children, and we have designed the service to need as little information as possible. It never asks a child, or anyone, for a name, age, contact details, photo or voice, and it has no chat, no sharing and no public profiles. The only information about use is the play record described in section 3, which is tied to the player and not to a named child.

PMI's counsel to add the COPPA (USA) and GDPR children's data statements, including how parents can review or delete the record for their player

10. The optional auto-start app

For Windows and Mac we offer a small optional app that opens this page by itself when the player is plugged in. It watches for the player on USB, opens the page in a separate Chrome or Edge window kept apart from your everyday browsing, and writes a short log on your own computer to help with support. It sends nothing to us. Uninstalling it removes the app and the data of its separate browser window. On Windows the small log file may stay in the computer's temporary folder until Windows cleans it. Chrome and Edge themselves are made by Google and Microsoft, whose own privacy terms apply to the browser.

11. The phone apps and the stand

The player can also show its films on a phone or tablet, through the PMI Player app for iPhone, iPad and Android, through a temporary version of it that an iPhone opens from the sticker on the player's stand (an App Clip), or through this page in Chrome on Android. All of them talk to the player over Bluetooth, which the phone asks your permission for the first time. On Android the permission is called "nearby devices".

The app remembers on the phone which player it last connected to, so it can find it again. That stays on the phone and is not sent to us. If you allow notifications, the app uses them only to tell you a cassette went in. The app sends us the same play record described in section 3 and nothing more. It does not use the phone's location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone. Older Android versions list location under the Bluetooth permission; the app does not read or send a location.

An iPhone removes the temporary App Clip by itself after a period without use. Deleting the app removes what it kept on the phone.

12. Your rights and how to contact us

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what information we hold about your player, to ask us to delete it, or to object to its use. Because we hold no names, we will need your player's serial number to find its record. PMI to explain how a parent finds the serial number

To make a request, contact privacy contact email. You may also complain to your local data protection authority. PMI's counsel to name the relevant authority or authorities

13. Changes to this notice

If we change how the service uses information, we will update this page and the date at the top. PMI to decide whether significant changes are announced in any other way
